History
The organization has worked successfully with African American male youth and their parents since 1993. Our program is viewed as effective; thus, referrals are made from many sources (all Gary middle and high schools, Gary City Court and Lake County Children and Family Services, etc).
AAAYC works with over 200 African American boys (ages 11-19) on a continuous basis. Less than 10% of
these youth have a father in the home. Less than 30% have any meaningful contact with their fathers. Many of them make negative remarks when adult
mentors mention their fathers. Research supports the concept that children learn what they live; thus, too many African American males get caught up in with the absentee father cycle. This must end. Male sexual behaviors and
responsible fatherhood must be taught.

AAAYC has been able to assist African American male youth in successfully completing their high school education. Of the hundreds of young men that we have worked with, only two have dropped out of school. We accompany many of the boys during Title 20 hearings and are often able to get them back in school immediately following a suspension. We have helped many to become focused, thus reducing the number of infractions via our youth enterprises a few young men have acquired the skills to establish their own businesses.
